We Hope to Do Good is the second module in Choices for Abundant
Event Details
We Hope to Do Good is the second module in Choices for Abundant Living: An Ethics Training Course for Clergy. Previously referred to as “Boundaries 201” this training is grounded in the conviction that Christian ethics is not merely about avoiding harm, but about cultivating lives and ministries that actively foster dignity, trust, and human flourishing. Rooted in natural law ethics, virtue ethics, and pastoral theology, the course equips commissioned and ordained ministers to exercise power responsibly, honor boundaries, and lead with hope, compassion, and integrity.
Through reflection on personal and positional power, roles and boundaries, microaggressions, inner formation, relational resilience, compassion fatigue, and trauma stewardship, this module invites clergy into deeper ethical awareness and sustainable practice. We Hope to Do Good centers ethical living as a form of faithful discipleship—one that cares for others without abandoning care of self, and that remains rooted in the love of God and neighbor even amid the realities of ministry.

Event Details
Join us for an elegant afternoon low tea as we journey through the rich history of this cherished tradition. Originating in 19th-century England as a pause for refreshment and reflection, low tea became a symbol of both leisure and social connection. Today, we gather not only to discuss that legacy but to reflect on the deeper call to economic justice. As we share tea and conversation, we will explore the call to work for a more equitable and compassionate world for all. An offering will be taken for a local food pantry.

Event Details
This training is based in an understanding that loving God with heart, soul, and mind and loving neighbor as self are the core principles that undergird all clergy ethics. It recognizes that God desires that each individual flourish and experience abundant living. Therefore, ethical living seeks to answer questions in a changing and complex world about how we can love God, love neighbor as self, and create space and opportunities for all individuals to flourish in all areas of life. Furthermore, it asserts that commissioned and ordained ministers are called by the community from within the community to serve and nurture it through leadership roles. Ministry is a vocation and professional ethical norms of other caring professions are the floor upon which clergy ethics are constructed. Undergirded by these believes, Choices for Abundant Living seeks to provide time and space for commissioned and ordained clergy to consider and discuss what it means for individuals:
1. To flourish as they establish healthy relationships built on empathy, kindness, mutual respect, and trust;
2. To engage in open communications that provides for problem solving, conflict resolution, opportunities to give and receive forgiveness;
3. To develop an understanding and respect of values, believes, and attitudes of others, even if they differ;
4. To acknowledge the independence and connectedness of each person.
Small group activities and discussion of case studies will allow commissioned and ordained clergy to reflect upon their values, their call to live within the standards set by My Code of Ethics of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and the importance of boundaries as they seek to make ethical decisions and act in ways guided by the principles of non-maleficence, veracity, and confidentiality.
